About Alaska Mitigation Banking

Family-owned Pioneer Mitigation Bank in Wasilla is one of the first mitigation banks in Alaska. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)-Alaska District approved its mitigation banking instrument and released credits in fall 2011.

Pioneer’s service area, with the Seldon and Edgerton bank parcels, includes watershed basins within the Mat-Su Valley Region of the Lower Susitna River Watershed.

Purchasing credits from a mitigation bank is the USACE’s preferred form of offsetting impacts to wetlands and streams. And since Alaska has few mitigation banks for transportation, oil and gas, and infrastructure developers to purchase credits from, the USACE will allow mitigation of impacts to wetlands beyond Pioneer’s service area on a case-by-case basis.

In fact, mitigation of impacts throughout the entire Matanuska-Susitna Borough is possible with Pioneer Mitigation Bank.
